When drafting rookies it’s always tough to predict what kind of impact they could have, personally, I like to stay away from rookies on draft day. Especially this crop of rookies, they do not compare to the potential Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, Patrik Laine, Jack Eichel possessed when heading into their first year. But still, there are some streamable, full-time rookies that may make an impact on your fantasy roster immediately.
Nico Hirschier- C, New Jersey Devils
Nico has officially cracked the Devils roster and will play a second line center role, possibly first line of Pavel Zacha does not work out. Nico was the 2017 NHL first overall draft pick, the fantasy value was bound to come, many were just unclear if he would crack the roster. Being the Devils faced some injuries and have some holes to fill on the offensive end, Hirschier will be a regular in the lineup. Playing alongside Marcus Johansson has its positives and we saw Hirschier in the preseason he definitely possesses NHL readiness, an excellent skater, and great two-way player. For the year, I’d have to guess Nico to slot 16 goals, 28 assists, and 12 power play points.
Brock Boser- RW, Vancouver Canucks
“Brocket ship” has some high hopes set for himself this season, after playing with Vancouver later in the year last season, Boser showed NHL capability, an immediate impact and somebody who can be slotted anywhere in the lineup and produce. Boeser has the goal scoring tendencies among the top players in the league but once he can ratchet up a few minor areas of his game like defensive zone play and transition up ice, he’ll be a top player in the league. Needless to say though, Boeser playing with Bo Horvat and Sven Baertschi on the first line will give him the opportunity to make an immediate impact for teams. Boeser was a 2015 NHL, 23rd overall pick, after finally cracking the roster, Boeser could net 25 goals, 20 assists and 15 power play points.
Nolan Patrick- C, Philadelphia Flyers
After dropping to second overall and landing in the hands of the Flyers, Patrick officially cracked the Flyers opening day roster early Monday morning. Now Patrick battled some injuries in the WHL with Brandon Wheat Kings and was expected to be a #1 overall pick for months leading up to the draft. If Patrick can stay healthy and Philadelphia fans do not get to his head ruin his game than he will pan out to be a fine forward. Patrick posses great two-way ability and is an excellent penalty killer, he’ll easily fit in on this roster and make an impact for the Flyers. Right now they have Patrick slotted on the second line with Jordan Weal and Wayne Simmonds, I think as the year goes on they’ll test him with Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek. Patrick I’m expecting to collect more assists than goals, I could see 30 assists, 13 goals, and 10 power play points.
