Tonight will feature fourteen NHL games but this will display seven NHL picks the other seven will come later in the day, but for now, lock these games up now.
New Jersey Devils(3-1-0) vs New York Rangers(1-4-0)
Both teams are coming off a loss and a back-to-back, and both teams will play their backups. It will be Keith Kinkaid vs Ondrej Pavelec so we can expect a bit more goal scoring and both teams to bare down. The Devils are coming off a 5-2 loss to Washington, in which T.J. Oshie buried two for his fourth, fifth goal of the year and Alexander Ovechkin scored his ninth on the year, in the Devils first loss of the season it will be a good test to see how this team responds, a young group, with the backup in net. As same goes for the Rangers with an offense that has struggled to score goals and has not seen Lundqvist at his best it will be a testament to this team to bounce back strong. Devils have shown the ability to score while the Rangers have not. But the Rangers know they cannot drop five of their first six games. Rangers, 3-2.
Toronto Maple Leafs(3-1-0) vs Montreal Canadiens(1-3-0)
Toronto has had three days rest while Montreal has had four, I don’t think that will be a factor tonight as Montreal has struggled in all facets of the game. Offensively they have a combined four goals on the year, and if not for Carey Price they would be winless at this point. Toronto’s well rested, high powered offense will give Montreal a headache like they did the Jets first game one of the year. Leafs, 5-2.
St. Louis Blues(4-1-0) vs Tampa Bay Lightning(3-1-0)
Good to see Steven Stamkos get his first goal back since surgery and missing a majority of the 16-17 season, also good to see St. Louis collect a loss, so we don’t have to hear any headlines like St. Louis for the Cup or any nonsense. Jake Allen will more than likely get the start as he has been the Blues best player and they will need him big tonight. A battle of snipers tonight, but one thing Tampa Bay out edges the Blues on is offensive depth and that will come in handy tonight. Lightning, 4-2.
Washington Capitals(3-1-1) vs Philadelphia Flyers(2-2-0)
Flyers get a well-rested four days off travel and welcome the former President trophy winner Capitals to the Wells Fargo Center for their home opener. The Flyers started the season off on a west coast trip and came out with a split, 2-2. The Capitals have shown signs of dominance and goal scoring insurance from Alexander Ovechkin(9 goals) and T.J. Oshie (5 goals), the Capitals and Flyers have a developed hatred for each other so this will make for a playoff atmosphere type of game. Washington will give Philipp Grubauer the start since going back to back, Philadelphia gives Brian Elliott his fourth start of the year. Back-to-back and home ice may play into the Flyers favor, Flyers 3-2.
Florida Panthers(2-1-0) vs Pittsburgh Penguins(2-2-1)
Both teams are coming off travel days and well rested so we can expect, Matt Murray and Roberto Luongo to start. Luongo just tied Curtis Joseph for fourth on all-time goaltender wins with 454. The Penguins have been back and forth on the spectrum between showing signs of dominance and signs of struggle, while the Panthers opened the season with the Lightning twice and knocking down the Blues for their first loss. The Panthers have the weapons upfront(well four guys) and the defensive tools to get it done if Luongo or Reimer can stay afloat this team will have a chance. As I do not expect the Penguins to drop this game on home ice. But, if so the Penguins will see the Panthers once again on October 20. Penguins, 3-1.
Colorado Avalanche(4-1-0) vs Dallas Stars(1-3-0)
The Avalanche are coming off another win, and a win against another good team, the Avs took down the Ducks 3-1 last night and contribution is coming from this top six like no other right now. The Av’s go back to back against a team hungry for a win, a team that had an incredible offseason and did not want to start the season like this, going 1-3-0 and only scoring eight goals in four games. The Stars need a win and need to see some life from their top six, the shots on goal and everything is great but someone needs to step up and score. While the Av’s are rolling in 4-1-0 off a big win vs Anaheim and continue to shock the world, I hate to do it, but this team needs to be slowed down and quieted sooner or later. Stars, 4-3.
