To start the season, the Jets went with Steve Mason and after not picking up a win in his first four starts, the Jets found themselves behind the eight-ball a bit. After Mason’s rough start he has had two starts in the last month. Which means, Connor Hellebuyck has been the go-to guy right now. Coming into the year Winnipeg obviously did not have the confidence in Hellebuyck that is why Mason was signed. Now it seems as if Hellebuyck is playing with a chip on his shoulder and ready to prove his NHL worth. Hellebuyck has 11 wins, 2.45 goals against and .925 save percentage, as the Jets have turned their season around and are now 13-5-3 on the season, second in the Central.
The Jets success this season has come off a lot of factors, between Hellebuyck getting hot, their offense picking it up and defense being a bit more consistent. But the Jets have shown their worth in the NHL this season I think that is fair to say. We can all agree that the Jets are not the best team in the NHL but are a very competitive team that are easily a top ten team right now and will probably see playoff hockey.
The Jets offense is unbelievably deep with Patrik Laine, Blake Wheeler, Nikolaj Ehlers, Mark Scheifele, Bryan Little, Kyle Connor, Adam Lowry, Mathieu Perreault the Jets have probably four top 35 point scorers in the NHL on their roster. It is an easy 70 points from Ehlers, Scheifele, Wheeler, and Laine, and when a team has numbers like that, winning games should come easy.
As the Jets have played 21 games thus far, we have a pretty good read on them now, the only concern here though is Hellebuyck’s ability to continue these performances. The Jets have lacked goaltending for a while now and without it, this team will not be able to make a playoff push. The Jets get goaltending and consistent goaltending, we will see them in the playoffs. Causing some damage.
