Wow, talk about a turn around for Barry Trotz the storied and hall of fame head coach goes from winning a Stanley Cup to a team that did not even make the playoffs last season and have won one playoff round in the last 15 years or more.
Barry Trotz signed a $4 million deal over five-years double what he was making in Washington and longer than what Washington offered. This is Trotz now third NHL franchise he will be taking over behind the bench. Trotz basically puts himself in the same category as Scotty Bowman when Bowman pulled the unthinkable and left Detroit in 2002 after they won the cup. Trotz is now the second coach to leave a Stanley Cup winning team after contract disputes since New York Rangers former head coach Mike Keenan left in 1994.
What does this mean for the Islanders? They all can look forward to an actually stable and functioning management and head coach now. The Islanders have dealt with Garth Snow the last 20 years and Jack Capuano and Doug Weight behind the bench. Acquiring Lou Lamoriello and then Trotz is a huge step in the right direction for the Islanders. For many reasons.
- It gives Tavares a huge incentive to come back now. Tavares has been on the rocks lately and after what Snow has done and Weight not doing a great job the team has not been that successful therefore many people thought Tavares was going to leave if the Islanders did not make a mix up the management group. You have to be positive that this signing of Trotz and Lamoriello was almost all because of Tavares.
- It gives the Islanders a “fresh” start in a sense. They have a different head coach, different GM, different things going on all over. With the coming of Matt Barzal, Josh Bailey signed back, most likely acquiring a goalie the Islanders have a lot of new faces coming in and a fresh start for players under a new coach and management. Therefore what some Islanders players did under Weight and Capuano will give some a chance to crack the line up and see more time, cough cough Josh Ho-Sang.
- Draws other free agents and possibly Philip Grubauer to the Islanders even more now. After you win a cup and are the fifth most winningest coach in NHL history you are going to draw quite the crowd to you.
The Islanders put Trotz among the other top paid NHL coaches like Mike Babcock, Joel Quinville and Claude Jullien. Trotz big reasoning for leaving the Capitals is solely based on money. The Capitals refused to give him a contract extension at the start of this year due to his failure in the playoffs in the past. After that Trotz and his group said they wanted well upward of 2 million and the Capitals said they would give him a 300,000 dollar increase over the next two years.
Well Islanders welcome your new coach for the next five years. We do not want to hear any complaining from any of you anymore.
Every hockey fan.
