Connor Sheary has been sent to Buffalo along with teammate Matt Hunwick. Penguins received a 2019 4th round pick that can be a 3rd in exchange for Sheary and Hunwick. With this trade, the Penguins free up about 5.3 million dollars in cap space.
Sheary spent the last three years in Pittsburgh being an undrafted free agent and really making his mark in the 2015-16 playoffs scoring 10 points in 23 games. Sheary caught the eye of many NHL fans. Being paired with Crosby did not hurt but Sheary’s best year came in 2016-17 where he tallied 53 points in 61 games (23G, 30A). After playing in 79 games last season and only producing 30 points, and playing in 12 playoff games last season to score 2 points. Sheary was on edge in Pittsburgh and as we can see he is out of Pittsburgh and off to Buffalo. Matt Hunwick the other piece of the deal spent last season in Pittsburgh playing in 42 games scoring 10 points. Hunwick, the 33-year-old defenseman has seen his fair share of moving around the league playing for 5 different NHL teams and being swapped back and forth for the first 7 years of his career with Boston and Colorado. Hunwick is a number six, seven defensemen at best tallying 117 points in 521 career games. Hunwick will join Buffalo, his sixth franchise to fight for a spot on the Buffalo blue line now.
What is Pittsburgh up to?
What can this mean? The Penguins are probably making a run at some free agents out there or looking to do a trade with Carolina for Jeff Skinner. The Penguins now have about 10.2 million in cap space. The Penguins could be looking at a trade for Skinner or… looking at some notable free agents out there like James Neal, a reunion in Pittsburgh would not be the worst thing but can the Penguins afford Neal’s requested 6 mil AAV? Possibly they are going after, Mike Green for some defensive support, David Perron to pair with Crosby, maybe Tyler Bozak or James Van Riemsdyk, Paul Martin, the list can go on and on. The Penguins have the reputation that can land many big names in the NHL and with cap space, Crosby and Malkin on their team plus back to back Stanley Cups, many players would not shy away from Pittsburgh.
Let’s see people, keep your eyes PEELED!
