MLB: Phillies, Mariners Swap Segura, Santana

The Philadelphia Phillies and Seattle Mariners both announced on Monday that a trade sending M’s All-Star shortstop, Jean Segura, to Philadelphia was, indeed, official.

In addition to Segura, the Phillies took on the contract of veteran reliever Juan Nicasio, and received left handed reliever James Pazos in the deal, while the Mariners received long time top-tier prospect JP Crawford as well as veteran first baseman Carlos Santana.

In all honesty, it is hard to see a scenario in which Philadelphia can not be considered major favorites in this trade. It was no secret that the club was desperate to move Santana, and the shortstop position was their least productive by far over the course of the 2018 season. Segura, quite arguably one of the best shortstops in the game, fits Philadelphia’s need perfectly, while simultaneously allowing the club to rid themselves of Carlos Santana’s less than ideal contract. Not to mention the fact that the Phillies received two very relevant additional pieces in Pazos and Nicasio.

The Phillies can now move club favorite, Rhys Hoskins, back to his natural spot at first base, and have even moreĀ cash than they had initially to pay for big ticket free agents. They also bolster the bullpen a great deal, and have finally found a reliable lefty for said pen, another hole they had been antsy to fill. The Mariners on the other hand have picked up a solid future piece in JP Crawford, as well as an extremely reliable first baseman in Santana, an asset they will likely look to flip just like the veterans, being Jay Bruce and Anthony Swarzak, they received via the Mets/Mariners blockbuster two days prior.

The Mariners and Jerry Dipoto have been ridiculously active this offseason — and we haven’t even hit the Winter Meetings yet. It will be interesting to see how the rest of Seattle’s offseason pans out, and, more importantly, their regular season as well. One thing is certain, they are indeed in full tear-down mode: everything must go. Who could be next? Kyle Seager, Dee Gordon, or even bonafide star Mitch Haniger? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

MLB Rumors: The First Big Trade of the 2018-19 Offseason is Nearing Completion

The Rays and Mariners are nearing a deal that would send Catcher Mike Zunino and Outfielder Guillermo Heredia to Tampa Bay in exchange for Outfielder Mallex Smith. Sources tell Mariners beat writer Ryan Divish that a trade may be completed within the day.

Zunino is an extremely young, viable piece that would serve as an excellent upgrade to the Rays current catching situation. Heredia on the other hand would be a solid bench piece and secondary starter for Tampa Bay, who already have Tommy Pham and Kevin Kiermier patrolling left and center field. This trade also frees up right field for the Rays newly acquired star Austin Meadows, who they received from the Pirates in the Chris Archer blockbuster.

Mallex Smith is a speedster who stole 40 bases in 2018, and gets on base often. He is an immediate threat at the leadoff position for any team.

This trade looks to benefit both recipients of it’s rewards, and is sure to start the offseason’s multitude of trades with a bang.
