Peter Chiarelli General Manager

Peter Chiarelli Is The Worst General Manager In The NHL

Peter Chiarelli has to be one of the worst general managers out there. It is still baffling to me that the Oilers signed Mikko Koskinen to a three-year extension worth 4.5 million a year. Koskinen is now paid more than Carter Hutton, Jimmy Howard, Jaroslav Halak, Thomas Greiss, Matt Murray, Devan Dubnyk, Jake Allen, Mike Smith, Jacob Markstrom. Not to mention Koskinen is 30-years-old this is his first season in the NHL and he has played just 27 games in the NHL and received this contract.

Oh to make matters a little worse Koskinen’s contract is comparable to Roberto Luongo. Fredrick Anderson is paid $500,000 more a year, Semyon Varlamov is paid 1.5 million more, Ben Bishop is paid $416,000 more a year, Jonathan Quick only gets paid 1.3 million more than Koskinen and finally Martin Jones only makes 1.25 million more a year.

Looking at the break down of his contract he is earning 5.2 million in 2019-2020 (Fredrick Anderson money), 3.8 million in 2020-2021 and 4.5 million in 2021-2022.

(FYI the reply tweets to this post are great)

The bigger question to this contract is, what are the Oilers doing? They go out and sign a 30-year-old goalie they basically have a 27 game report on and give him a top-ten goalie contract. As well, with all the issues the Oilers have they go out and address their goaltending?!! What about their offense, their defense, etc? The last thing they needed to do was have this conversation.

Looking at the Oilers numbers, they rank 21st in goals for (139) just five more than one of the leagues worst New York Rangers. They rank 8th in goals against (160) just two less than the Rangers and the Devils. Their penalty kill is ranked 27th at 76.8 the league best is 87.2. They rank 9th in power play at 21.5 their only good marker. They allow 31.2 shots against per game and allow 3.27 goals against while only scoring 2.84 goals for. Yet the Oilers address signing Mikko Koskinen. Instead of going out and getting a rental player or even long term player, they use 13.5 million dollars in cap space on a goaltender.

To makes matters worse the Oilers waive Ty Rattie and Ryan Spooner the other day. Ryan Spooner was the player they traded for in the Ryan Strome deal. Which Ryan Strome is the player they trader for in the Jordan Eberle deal. So basically they allowed Jordan Eberle to walk for free. Do we have to get into the Taylor Hall for Adam Larsson deal?

The Oilers owner Daryl Katz has to fire Peter Chiarelli or this organization is not going anywhere with the generational talent of Connor McDavid it will be a waste of McDavid’s youth years if Chiarelli stays in Edmonton.
