Casey Mittlestadt future with Buffalo

As the 2017-2018 NHL season winds down a lot of NHL teams have recalled their recent draftees or signing(s) to test them in the remaining NHL action. Some are more publicized than others, and that so happens to be the case in Buffalo. Despite a 25-42-12 record for the Sabres and 31st place finish. Buffalo fans still seem to be hopeful for the future, with all eyes on the recent 2017 draft pick, Casey Mittlestadt. Besides Mittlestadt, the Sabres do have a few other solid prospects waiting to make their mark in the league but Mittlestadt has been a proven goal scorer and difference maker in the levels he has played at prior to this.

Mittlestadt recently won the World Juniors tournament MVP, in which he tallied 11 points(4G, 7A) in 7 games. Playing his first season of NCAA hockey with the Univ. of Minnesota, Mittlestadt slotted 30 points(11G, 19A) in 34 games, earning the NCAA (BIG) All-Rookie team, and in just this year Mittlestadt has some pretty impressive accomplishments under his belt. Like, WJC Best Forward, Most points, All-Star team. But before coming to Minnesota and World Junior play this year, Mittlestadt slotted 94 points in 49 games between the Eden Prairie High(HS) and Green Bay Gamblers(USHL).

It is pretty evident coming out of high school Mittlestadt was going to make an impact wherever he went. Despite his 6’1 frame and 185-pound stature, Mittlesatdt has not allowed the talk of being weak on the puck get to his head.

This same hype came when Jack Eichel was drafted yet, I would assume many thought Eichel was the better player, a bigger body, unbelievable shot and just a player who can take over the game. Well, hopefully with the addition of Mittlestadt it can be Eichel + Mittlestadt to = a better Buffalo season next year. We can project Mittlestadt to be a full-time player and make the opening day roster but it is up to him to keep that spot. Right now he is playing alongside Evan Rodrigues and Kyle Okposo, not two players that will really make this kid’s skills shine, but it is only a matter of time until it is Jack Eichel-Mittlestadt and Pominville on a line together. Until then, get ready for another top draft pick Buffalo! Dahlin?

World Junior Hockey Games: January 4, 2018

Today there will really be no excuse to not watch every single game on today as many are probably dealing with some snow circumstances, or canceled school, we all should be at least tuning into the USA vs Sweden game at 4 PM(EST).

Belarus vs Denmark

Probably one of the least exciting games of the day airs at 12 PM(EST) as Belarus takes on Denmark in a battle of the basement of the tournament. Belarus has lost all five games up to this point in the tournament, they dropped 6-1 to Sweden, 3-2 to Switzerland, 5-2 to Russia, 6-5 to the Czech Republic and 5-4 to Denmark. Denmark is most certainly the favorite here today as Belarus has competed this tournament but just do not match up well vs other teams. Denmark now is also struggling this tournament as they have dropped their first four games to USA, Finland, Canada and Solvokia and their only win coming against Belarus two days ago.

USA vs Sweden

This begins the medal round games as USA faces off against Sweden, whatever team win goes on to play the Czech Republic or Canada, whatever team loses plays for the loser of the Czech, Canada game, for the bronze medal. As we get to see some great talent displayed in this game, Sweden’s #1 prospect for this 2018 NHL draft Rhasums Dhalin and former first-round pick Liass Andersson. The US has a total of 11 first round picks and they seem to be the favorite here today. But, USA vs Sweden has to be a game you put on your radar right now to watch, two teams that are seeing success this tournament and two of the better teams here. Sweden has collected five wins, coming against Belarus, Czech’s, Switzerland, Russia, and Solvokia. Now they face one of their best opponents for the final day of the tournament. The USA only dropped one game this tournament in which was an upset loss to Solvokia, but they have handled their own taking wins vs Canada, Finland, Denmark, and Russia. USA needs a win to move on.

Czech Republic vs Canada

A battle for gold kicks off tonight at 8 PM(EST), and it seems Canada is the favorite after manhandling Switzerland, and as the Czech’s beta Finland in a thrilling shootout win, now the two meet for a chance to battle for gold. The winner moves on, loser battles for bronze. Canada the powerhouse of the games it seems like are rolling through much of the competition their only loss coming to the USA, but Canada has beaten Finland, Solvokia, Denmark and Switzerland most wins coming in a blowout fashion. Going up against another solid team though Canada will not take an easy one tonight as the Czech’s have won games against Russia, Belarus, Switzer, and Finland. Canada seems to be the favorite here tonight, either way, this game will be a great game to close out the day.

WJC 2018: Team USA & Canada announce players for tryout

The other night on NHL Network Team USA released the 28 players who will have a shot of making the USA World Juniors team, and Canada released their roster yesterday with the 32 players who will have a shot on making the World Juniors roster.

Team USA Preliminary Roster:

World Juniors 2018

Seeing Casey Mittelstadt on the World Juniors stage is going to be something special. Kailer Yamamoto is going to be finally put on a stage where he will be the spotlight and given the chance to excel. Ryan Poehling will be an interesting addition to the team, one of the few players who shocked me on this list. Kieffer Bellows is being brought back one of the few forwards to be brought back from last year. Same goes for Adam Fox on defense he’ll be leading the charge with Charlie McAvoy gone.

Team Canada Preliminary Roster:

World Juniors 2018

This team is going to be unbelievable, between Hart in net, Bean, Clague on defense, Glass, Mcleod, Steel, Suzuki on offense this team is going to be so deep and one of the best teams in the tournament. Like always nothing new here.

World Juniors roster to be annocued between 5-6pm TODAY!

The World Juniors 2018 roster is set to be announced today at 5pm on NHL Network, one of the most anticipated times of the year for many hockey fans, well the die-hard ones. We get to see the future talent of the NHL play on the big stage and see what they are made of.

In years past we have seen Troy Terry pull the T.J. Oshie and score numerous shootout goals to lift the US to an upset win over Team Canada. We have seen last years World Juniors roster filled with talent, players like Charlie McAvoy, who is playing in the NHL for the Bruins now, and during this World Juniors run is when McAvoy’s put a stamp on his name and essentially punched his ticket to a first-round draft pick. Along with Clayton Keller, who is up for the Calder right now, we saw him display his Patrick Kane likeability and make a name for himself as well. Tage Thompson, the highly sought out, St. Louis Blues prospect who was drafted 1st round, 26th overall last season.

The World Juniors roster has been filled with talent and many exciting young players, and nothing will change this season, as we expect this team to be just as good. The way the roster works for the World Juniors is simple, but a tad complicated, the player must be under 20-years-old, and even if they have played NHL games they may still be eligible for the roster. For example, Jake Virtanen played 12 games and was allowed on Team Canada.

With that said, many of the players on the roster last season like Charlie McAvoy, Clayton Keller, Kieffer Bellows, Tage Thompson, Jeremy Bracco, Jordan Greenway,  Tory Terry, Adam Fox will more than likely be on this year’s roster and are all very exceptional players. With players like that, it will be tough for Team USA not to be competitive, but we are unsure what Canada, Sweden, and Finland will look like.

We just wait patiently now until 5 PM today on NHL Network, don’t miss out!
